Chittagong City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin on Friday urged the people living along the Patenga coast to move to shelters to protect themselves against cyclone Fani.
“We have taken all-out necessary preparations to tackle Fani. As part of the preparations, we have opened a control room to provide services to residents. 13 cyclone shelters and educational institutions are ready so that people can take shelter,” said the mayor.
Meanwhile, Chittagong district administration also opened a control room for effective management during and after the storm.
Chittagong acting deputy commissioner Delwar Hossain told Dhaka Tribune that 2,748 cyclone shelters and educational institutions—with a capacity for accommodating 800,000 people—had been prepared all over the region.
Chittagong Civil Surgeon Dr Azizur Rahman Siddique said that as many as 284 medical teams comprising of 852 healthcare personnel were also on standby.
“The medical teams are prepared to provide round the clock services if needed,” the civil surgeon added.
The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) also suspended all port operations on Friday as a precautionary measure against the storm.
Md Omar Faruk, secretary of the CPA, said they had were prepared to combat the storm.
“Vessels have been cleared from all jetties of the port. Loading and unloading operations were suspended from Friday morning,” he stated.
